Speakers and Agenda

The PDC will feature discussions on the Northwest Passage, Arctic Shipping, tsunami trash, personal electronics on the bridge, and more.

Captain Beverly Havlik, USC — UCSG Icebreaker Program

Captain Havlik commanded the mission aboard the Healy to bring fuel to Nome, Alaska, in January of this year. The Healy, based in Seattle, is the only operating Icebreaker in the USCG.

J. Pennelope Goforth — NW Passage

Goforth is a noted maritime author and researcher and will be speaking on the Northwest Passage. Her presentation, intended to provoke and educate, will discuss the most recent history of developments and accords by Arctic bordering countries based on international conference recommendations, proposed legislation by the United States Congress, and the historic preparations underway by global maritime corporations to cash in.

LCDR Dave Zezula — Northwest Passage Charting

LCDR Dave Zezula is the Chief of Pacific Hydrographic Branch, NOAA, in Seattle.

Dr. Curtis Ebbesmeyer, Ph.D — Tracking Tsunami Debris

Ph.D. in oceanography from the University of Washington, best known for his expertise on ocean currents and floating objects. He is co-author of the book, Flotsametrics and the Floating World: How one man's obsession with runaway sneakers and rubber ducks revolutionized ocean science. Dr. Ebbesmeyer will be speaking about the Pacific Ocean tracking of the floating debris from the Japanese tsunami.

B.E. Meyers — Anti-piracy, non-lethal lasers

A locally-based, Redmond company, B.E. Meyers, manufactures laser targeting and illumination systems, night vision and long range surveillance devices. Company representatives will explain the latest in anti-piracy, non-lethal lasers.

  • Canadian Master Mariner representative, (to be named) on topic of Northwest Passage from Canadian perspective;
  • Pacific Maritime Institute representative (to be named) on topic of ice navigation for the master mariner.

Evening Social

Queen of Seattle Dinner, cruise and tour

The Queen Of Seattle is an old fashioned sternwheeler with a working steam engine. Guests will be allowed to visit below and view the steam engine working. We will be touring Lake Union and up to the Government locks for a 2 ½ hour trip which includes a catered dinner.

Lalonde Spirit of the Seas Award Presentation

The Father Maurice Lalonde Spirit of the Seas Award is the highest honor that the Council of American Master Mariners can give its members. It is named for one of our members, Captain/Father Maurice Lalonde. Recipients demonstrate humanitarianism, professionalism, seamanship, life-time achievement and noteworthy accomplishments, along with contributions to the maritime industry and the Spirit of the Seas in their everyday lives.
